For
Immediate Release: The Cultural Affairs Commission at UCLA, the organization that
hosts the annual JazzReggae Festival, announced today it will hold a free
concert entitled “West Africa meets Westwood,” on April 6, 2008 at 7pm. The event will showcase West African and
American musical traditions, including: Afrobeat, Highlife, Jazz, and
Fusion. The show will
feature: Master Nigerian bandleader Babá Ken Okulolo, who leads the
Afro-Beat ensemble Kotoja, and the West African Highlife Band; known for his
work with King Sunny Ade and other legendary Nigerian
bands; Soji
Odukogbe, long-time
lead guitarist for the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti; Will
Magid,
trumpeter for Solomon Burke and a UCLA senior; along with a group of talented UCLA musicians and
dancers. The event is presented by: The Herb Albert School Of Music, The
UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology, The UCLA Office of Residential Life, Guayaki Yerba Mate, and The
Cultural Affairs Commission. After the concert a reception will be held for donors and invited
